The Finish of the Paint is as Important as the Color in Your Northern Virginia Home
Choosing the right paint color is important but choosing the right finish of paint is even more important in some circumstances. A shopping trip to the home improvement, hardware or paint store is never an easy task; typically, there are too many colors, brands and finishes to choose from. Selecting the right finish for the job is a good place to begin.
Are you looking for paint that hides imperfections in the walls while also providing adequate wall coverage? Matte finish paint often requires more than one coat for an even and consistent finish and is not durable enough to withstand repeated washing. Matte finish paint is not the ideal candidate for painting the kitchen or the children’s playroom. However, if you are incorporating a home theater in your home, the matte finish is ideal.
Satin paint is shinier than matte finish but not nearly as shiny as glossy finish. This durable paint provides even coverage typically in one coat and can easily withstand cleaning without noticeable wear. The shine factor does tend to show nearly all imperfections of the wall surface, so unless your wall is sanded smooth or brand new, you may want to consider a different finish.
Eggshell paint finishes give off a subtle shine, but unlike satin finish paint, it does hide wall imperfections. Eggshell finishes are commonly chosen for projects throughout the home due to its one-coat coverage and durability characteristics.
Semi-gloss paint is traditionally used on trims and accents in the home rather than the walls due to its shininess. The paint is durable and can withstand normal wear and tear, and thus is likely to be used on hallway baseboards and other high traffic areas where a touch of shine is desired.
