Besides your kitchen floor, your countertops usually take up the most surface area in your kitchen. Not to mention your countertops can be the focal point of the room and where most of the socializing takes place – so make sure your countertops are not only well-suited for the job, but also attractive.

Consider the following popular materials when choosing your new kitchen countertops:

  • Durable and easy to clean, ceramic tile is offered in a wide range of colors, textures, and designs. However, you must be sure not to drop heavy items on the countertop, as ceramic tile can chip or crack. Spills can sometimes stain the tile’s grout lines.
  • Featuring a nonporous surface that resists scratching, engineered stone is available in a range of colors and looks and is easy to maintain. Engineered stone tends to be on the pricey side, but is worth the expense for its high level of durability.
  • Granite, typically the most expensive countertop material, will last a lifetime and comes with a high resale value. Granite countertops should be sealed in order to resist stains.
  • Lauded for their warm, inviting look, wood countertops are available in many finishes and species, such as maple and oak. Wood countertops are easy to clean and be resanded as needed, but are likely to be damaged by water and stains over time.
  • Stainless steel countertops offer a clean, contemporary look. Heat resistant and durable, these countertops are often expensive and prone to denting.
  • On the inexpensive end, laminate countertops are made of plastic-coated synthetics. Durable and easy to maintain, laminate countertops do not net a high resale value, and their scratches and chips can be very difficult to repair.
  • Once used in historic homes, soapstone countertops are once again on the rise. Dark gray in color, smooth soapstone requires regular maintenance and oiling.
  • Concrete countertops can be textured or stained, meaning this material can complement a wide range of décor styles. Usually on the expensive side, concrete countertops are heat and scratch resistant, as well as porous, meaning they need to be sealed and well maintained.
