The Paint Color Sets the Tone In Your Northern Virginia Home
Selecting the right type of color, even the right shade for painting your home is more important than you may think when repainting your Northern Virginia home. Not only does the color of the walls provide the canvas on which all other decorations are displayed, it also emanates a feeling and aura that many people may dismiss and unimportant.
Colors are grouped by the feelings they promote. Shades of blue, violet and green invoke feelings of nature and natural effects such as water, trees, flowers and the sky. While warm colors such as all hues of red, orange and brown remind us of fall images, cozy fires and times we would like stay warm indoors than go outside and be cold. Identifying the mood you are trying to create when choosing a color makes the selection process easier and will ultimately influence the other decorating choices of the room.
The amount of natural light available in a room should be considered before selecting a specific color as well. Windowless rooms – or even those with few windows like most bathrooms – already feel smaller, without the added feeling of darkness from a dark shade of paint. Choose a soft color, such as sage green, soft gray or even yellow top open the room up without adding any physical space to the home.
Select a bright or neutral color for small rooms to de-emphasize the size of the room while also avoiding drying attention to your attempt to fool the eye. Bright or neutral colors often work well in these rooms, and if you feel you may be selecting a color that is too strong or vivid for the space, simply choose a shade that is one- to two steps below it for the same color with a different effect.
