Here at JJK Remodeling we recognize that not all projects require the assistance of a professional service company. We pride ourselves on the ability to provide consumers with the appropriate resources to see their dream projects become a reality. One of the most common home improvement projects conducted by homeowners is painting. Many homeowners consider painting to be the easiest of tasks. In many cases, painting projects can become overwhelming if not conducted in the appropriate manner. In order to save you on time, money, and energy, the staff a JJK Remodeling has put together a resource guide to bring comfort and ease to your next painting project.

Whether you live in a small colonial in Manassas, VA or a contemporary duplex like the ones found throughout Northern Virginia and in Reston, VA, painting does not have to be a dreaded task. Carefully preparing a room for painting is more than half the battle. To begin, carefully remove all paintings and fixtures from the walls. This includes both heating and electrical covers. It is best to put painter's tape over any exposed holes or receptacles let open after removing the faceplates. Next, carefully remove all furniture and decorative arrangements from the room completely. Some individuals believe that draping such items as couches and chairs will provide protection to the furniture as well as save you time and energy. The benefit of removing furniture totally from a room alleviates the presence of any obstacle. Removing all furniture from the room will also allow you to place plastic sheeting on the floor to protect from spills, splashes, and drips. Carefully remove all doorknobs and handles. Make sure they are marked so as to simplify their proper replacement.

paint your room

Once your room has been cleared it is imperative to remove any wallpaper. Though it is tempting to paint over, wallpaper can ultimately leave your freshly painted walls looking undesirable. For best results, remove the wallpaper by saturating it with a wet sponge. Once the wallpaper has been removed there will most likely be adhesive left over. We recommend you purchase an adhesive remover from your local hardware store. Once adhesive remover has been applied to the walls, rise well, and let dry over a 24-hour period.

In order to guarantee a fresh smooth surface, repair all cracks and holes left in the walls. Purchase joint compound and a putty knife to fill all holes and cracks. Apply joint compound to the cracks or holes and smooth over with a putty knife. Once these small repairs have been made you are ready to sand your walls. Fine-grade sandpaper is ideal for smoothing the surface of your walls. Sanding your walls also creates a surface that is more desirable for adhesive paints.

After you have completed all of these tasks we suggest that you thoroughly clean the room in which you are working in. Vacuum any dust, paint, or other undesirable particles left over form your prep work. Also, clean the surface of your walls in order to create the ideal conditions for newly applied paint. A combination of detergent, bleach, and water should do the job. While washing your walls with this solution it is important to wear protecting rubber gloves and goggles in order to ensure optimum safety. Allow your walls to dry for a period of 24 hours. Once they have completely dried you are ready to paint.

Prepping your home before painting is critical and time consuming but necessary if your going to do the job correctly.
