Choosing a Paint Color to Set a Mood for Your Northern Virginia Home

Choosing the right color for your interior painting project means more than just picking out a color from the seemingly endless options at the local home improvement or hardware store. The color of a room provides an atmosphere and mood that cannot be achieved with accessories alone.

Often referred to as warm or cool colors, these color groups are named by the feeling and emotion they evoke. Cool colors include all shades of blue, violet and green since these colors tend to remind people of water, flowers and the outdoors in general. Warm colors include red, orange, brown and pink since they tend to bring about images of fall leaves and cozy fires. Knowing what mood you are trying to create before picking a color will make the selection easier and you happier with the final decision.

Consider the amount of natural light in a room prior to making a color selection. Rooms without many Ð or any Ð windows tend to feel smaller when painted a deep, dark color. Choosing a lighter shade of a soft color, such as sage green, soft gray or even yellow can brighten the room immensely without any other addition to the room.

Avoid dark colors in small rooms as well; small rooms only feel smaller when painted a dark color. Go with colors that are bright or neutral to avoid emphasizing the size of the room. If a color you are considering may be teetering around too dark, choose a sample one or two shades lighter and experiment at home before making your purchase.

Always check the paint swatch outside in natural light before making a final decision. Fluorescent and incandescent lighting will play on the color differently as well, so make sure you like the color in all types of lighting.
